Ferry, Food, Flats and Swing Bridges

Thursday

We all head to Kees and Julies room for breakfast where we fight over the last of Julies homemade muesli ( hands down the best muesli I have ever had ). After breakfast its a 60km+ flat out and back ride to Rabbit Island where we catch the Ferry to Mapua for an excellent excellent lunch.

Great Taste Trail - 60km

The bike paths go for miles around Nelson

Not sure why it's called the Great Taste Trail...no great tastes along the way but lunch at the end was good

A swing bridge is all fun and games until it starts to swing. Ten of us on the bridge going nicely then it got up a good swing and we all got thrown off our bikes, no injuries and being at the back it was pretty funny to see nine riders toppling off their bikes simultaneously.

Directly after the bridge debacle we met the Trail Project Manager

Along the shoreline of Rabbit Island

Julie showing us how to ride onto the Ferry

Mapua Ferry - Bike stands and all.

Seagulls cleaning up after us

Watching the Ferry head out again

Puncture repair on the Ferry, we had to stop repeatedly to pump Janes tyre back up, the bit of wire in the tyre wasn't found until we got back to the motel

John shows us how to ride off the Ferry with style

We meet Terry and Marie on the Trail

In the afternoon Phil, Alice, Kees, Andrew and I head out to ride the Hackett Trail, out and back, a lovely ride on single track following the course of a creek with a gradual climb. In spots the track was quite narrow with steep drop offs to the creek far below.

Hackett Trail - 12km

Jane receives the sacred Tiki but somehow while in Julians hands it turned into a mouse trap.

Tonight's entertainment is a trivia quiz provided by Quiz Mistress Jane, I don't want to give anything away but if you do one of Janes quizzes make sure you know what to do with a jandal and what AcaDaca stands for.
